2011

My first ever job as a Freelancer. At the time I was still studying at university just dipping my toes into my graphic design degree.

I had a mentor who encouraged me to go and offer some design services to any local shop that could need it - for free.

There was a fish and chips shop right in front of our family home, and I figured I could start there. Hyper local much? So I turned up one afternoon for an order and wanted to have a quick chat to the manager, looking at the menu’s on the wall and on the stands. I asked if they needed some redesign for any of their current menus.

The owners were so keen and excited and even though I told them I’d do it for free, they offered to give me free food - aside from the fish and chips, the fried chicken was exceptional.

Over a period of 6 months I had a really relaxing and fun time with this - redesgning first and foremost the iconic whale logo for Moby Dick himself. Looking at colours and typography and taking photos of the food items on the menu.

I could then proceed with redesigning the menu boards and pamphlets. The clients loved it so much that they asked for some t-shirt designs and even used the new logo to update the mural on the shop’s external wall.

To this day I am so grateful for my mentor and the lovely people of Moby Dick’s for giving me my first taste to the world of Freelance design. If you’re ever in Wellington, go check them out!
